Google+ My Initial Thoughts

Posted on 08 July 2011 by Amanda Veronica

Google’s new attempt  at a social network. They’re always coming in behind with a decent product, but nothing innovative.

I don’t think Google+  would be getting so much attention if it weren’t Google. I know, I know, you’re thinking, obviously, but seriously, there’s nothing really exciting here. On your home page you’ve got your standard feed that shows you what your friends are posting. You can see your friends over to the side and your different groups (circles), “Hang Out” on video chat (Too bad Facebook has already got that too). I mean it’s nice. I think I could use it to follow new people in industry specific areas I’m interested in, and separate them by circles and it will be more of an RSS feed from people rather then articles. May be nice to go back and see what I’ve “+1″, but I don’t think I’ll use it for much else.

I think Google+ might be a good solution for people who hate Facebook and how crowded with crap it is (which could be the fault of the individual who just adds everything), and people who already use Google’s other features, like Google Docs, Calendar, etc. They seem to be in a good place to add a lot of collaborative tools as well (like a GoToMeeting competitor), which is something I think Google does well. It’s almost a refreshing new chance to start a social network after I’ve grown up since I joined Facebook. But if you’re looking for more privacy, you might be able to better categorize who sees what and maybe keep yourself out of trouble, but it’s not saving your privacy from the guys running the show… (See Ed Bott’s Post on What Do Google Execs Know About Google Privacy That You Don’t).

One thing I do like… is how clean the portal is. My guess though, is that they plan to skin the sides of the site with advertisements (a new ad sense option?). Or add standard ads down the side. I mean… look at all that screen-estate! I’m sure they have plans to take as much of  the information as they can from you and use that to put ads in front of you on your Google+ page. So I let them take the info they want, and let them dissect every action I do through Google and they’ll interpret it how they wish, even if it doesn’t have anything to do with my actual interests. But what do I get in return? More crappy Ad Sense ads… Maybe… At Pixeldom, we reward our users. I should be earning something for posting content in my feed if they’re going to sit there and analyze for their benefit. Although, these are my assumptions, but I’m jaded, I assume large companies are greedy like that.

What do you think?

Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D

Posted on 25 September 2010 by Amanda Veronica

I don’t have the best memory when it comes to recalling movies, but I do remember what I love and what I hate. I know I have seen 1 or 2 or the previous Resident Evil movies, but I don’t remember much about them, meaning I didn’t love or hate them.

This rendition defiantly made me feel like I was seeing a video game adaptation. The zombie screens seemed replicated, I often got tense as they moved through stages, and the story loosely kept everything together. As a story, it wasn’t great but going into this movie I wasn’t expecting a plot. I just wanted to see Mila Jovovich in some bad ass action shots while killing some zombies. Poor Ali Larter could have had some great moments herself, but I think she failed as a star, but succeeded in boosting the star by comparison.

As 3D entertainment, this was great. It had me at the edge of my seat, with my eyeballs glued to the center of the screen. I’m glad I saw it.
