Piranha in 3D

Piranha in 3D

Posted on 23 August 2010 by Amanda Veronica

piranha3d_poster-535x401Fantastic, cheesy, summer horror flick. I could feel the ridiculousness start before anything even happened. This movie was exactly what I thought it would be, a stupid, over the top horror movie, done in 3D for all the right reasons. Every time I heard a woman screaming, I thought “is it a brutal death? or is it boobs? Blood or boobs?” It was great.

It’s sad that they are making movies still that are on par with this one, only they are taking them seriously, which is just sad. This is something that I will be recalling from my summer and and it’s high points as the weather starts to chill.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Posted on 16 August 2010 by Amanda Veronica

20060524scottpilgrim Perfect picture for this post, as Mario Bros. 3 is my favorite video game from childhood.  This game… I mean movie, brings out the childhood wish of living a video game.

I went into this experience with low expectations. After seeing the previews a few times, I just had this weird dislike for Michael Cera as the main character. I really knew nothing about the plot of the movie, but I didn’t think he fit, what I thought was the superhero. I started to read the first comic the night we went to see the movie, and this made me more excited to see the movie, but still skeptical of how Cera would preform as Scott Pilgrim. Well, it fit.

Kiren Calcin as Wallace, hilarious. This movie was full of fun comic call outs. Super power filled fights. It had an epic battle of the bands.

Knifes is the epitome of the girls I hated when going to concerts back in high school. Even down to the fact that she would copy the styles of the girl who hung with the guys in the band. She even ends up with the second choice bass player just to stay connected to the band.

Todd Ingram, and his vegan super powers… Why do so many vegans talk about their lifestyle choice as if their diet makes them superior? This character poked fun at that.

I really enjoyed this movie. I want to defeat my problems and get coins for doing so! You don’t have to be a gamer, or into comics to really enjoy this movie. It would, however, help if you played some sort of video game at least as a child. There are references to leveling up, stats, collecting bounty, beating bosses, over exatrated weapons and strength, comic book style of callouts. Speaking of weapons, that whip with the sword tip, uhhhh, that’s my weapon of choice.

Most of the success of this movie can be credited to how great the comic is, and how closely it can hit home with a lot of  the Millennial generation.

I’m ready to see this one again. Excited for the Blu-ray.

The Expendables, a Comedy

The Expendables, a Comedy

APphoto_Film Review The Expendables

What a glorious merge of 9 huge egos. I have this sneaky suspicion that each big name actor had a requirement for a specific number of close ups, and they had so little time to fit them all in, that they just started sticking them anywhere. Often in place of dramatic pauses with no fulfilling emphasis, on anything. Just awkward staring.

The six different plot lines were all more ridiculous then the previous. Stallone’s character was the most pathetic with the way he chased that girl back to South America, and wait? Didn’t they just meet? Yang needs money, for his family. Lee’s love interest is expected to take him back because he’s Jason Stathom, and why wouldn’t she…

I kept waiting for some epic one liners and amazing action scenes, but it was just comedy.

The Other Guys

Posted on 08 August 2010 by Amanda Veronica

Let this start off fair. I saw this at a drive-in, which after this being my first experience at the drive-in I can see how it may not be the experience for seeing a film in its true vision.

It’s hard to say that this movie stands out from any of the other comedies I’ve seen as of late, but I enjoyed it more then I thought I would. I was expecting Will Ferrell to play another version of his typical childlike loud voiced character, which he did, but he still managed to make me laugh.

I prefer Mark Wahlberg in a more serious role, but he deserved something kind of fun that would remind us he’s still out there. You don’t get as much face time being a producer.

Not one for the books.

Step Up in 3D – All the Way

Posted on 07 August 2010 by Amanda Veronica

The plot is laughable, as I’m sure you’ve heard, but does not take away from what this really is, which is visually awesome.

The storyline between the movie maker guy and that one girl reminded me of watching the Babersitters’ Club or Kids Incorporated. It literally had me laughing out loud. It was done almost as well as the first Bring It On movie, really over the top cliché drama scenes for the sake of this not being just one big dance party and giving viewers, and the dancers, room to breathe.

Now the dance… I am by no means an expert, but as someone who can appreciate art for it’s rhythm alone… This was great rhythm, I really wanted to get up and move my body. After I almost tripped getting out of seat at the end of the night, it’s probably good I didn’t.

Best scene was when they flooded the dance floor during the competition. Amazing! Like Stomp on steroids… with attitude. Stomp in 3D?

Dinner for Schmucks

Dinner for Schmucks

If you asked me, I would say wait and see it at home for something light and fun, not really worth going to the theatre for unless you’re just trying to escape the heat.

The intros are quick and on to the funny. Steve Carell’s character is over the top ridiculous with his unconventional hobby of building dioramas for his taxidermied mice, which ends up being a sweet and pathetic story. Paul Rudd plays his part well, he’s just a character that I don’t care about, he’s really just a baseline for the plot, which in of itself is silly.

Somewhere in the middle of the movie I remember that Zach Galifianakis is supposed to be in this movie, and once he’s introduced I wish he was in it all along. Barry and Therman have a great funny magical world all themselves, you can tell they had a really good time onset.

A forgettable movie, but not a complete waste of time.
